Elementary Silicon and Silicon Alloys. Silicon is a brittle steel-gray metalloid, with m.p. 1420 C, b.p. 2600° C, and density 2.42 g/cm. It can be made by the reduction of silicon tetrachloride by sodium ... [Pg.620]

The high-alloy silicon irons are used in draining pipelines, pumps, valves, other process equipment, and anodes for cathodic protection with impressed current. [Pg.243]

A semiquantitative analysis carried out by integrating the silicon-related peak intensities revealed that at the beginning of the first lithiation Li preferentially saturated the graphite phase (intercalation), and later, silicon became involved in the reaction (alloying). However, due to the milder alloying conditions, in the presence of the carbonaceous phase, the formation of lithium-silicon alloys with high lithium content on the surface of the alloying silicon particles has been suppressed. Therefore, the carbonaceous media led to a more uniform distribution of Li within the bulk of the active silicon particles. [Pg.251]

In some alloys silicon is added for high temperature oxidation resistance. Silicon has also been shown to provide resistance to stress corrosion cracking, as well as resistance to corrosion by oxidizing acids. [Pg.586]

Silicon bronze has approximately the same corrosion resistance as copper, but better mechanical properties and superior weldability. The corrosion rates are affected less by oxygen and carbon dioxide contents than with other copper alloys. Silicon bronzes can handle cold dilute hydrochloric acid, cold and hot dilute sulfuric acid, and cold concentrated sulfuric acid. They have better resistance to SCC than the common brasses. In the presence of high-pressure steam, silicon bronze is susceptible to embrittlement. [Pg.490]

The main amount of the alloying silicon is insoluble in non-oxydizing acids. As it contains appreciable amounts of phosphorus, it must either be filtered off and separately dissolved, or acid mixtures must be used which are able to dissolve the sample completely. [Pg.366]
