Oleo-resinous primers plus alkyd finish These are normally used for softwood and should be designed to be flexible and smooth for subsequent paint. [Pg.133]

Aluminum-based primer plus alkyd finish The binder for these primers is normally oleo-resinous but the pigmentation is aluminum flake. This type is preferred for hardwoods and softwoods where knots or resinous areas predominate. They do not give such a smooth surface as primers without aluminum. [Pg.133]

Emulsion-based primer plus alkyd finish These are based on acrylic resin dispersions and have the advantage of a rapid rate of drying. They generally have excellent adhesion and flexibility but lack the sealing properties of aluminum primers. [Pg.133]

Except for urethane oil and alkyd finishes, all polyurethanes require solvents that will not react with isocyanates alcohols and ether-alcohols are obviously out. The water content of the solvents should be negligible. Manufacturers often label their solvents urethane grade , implying low water content. Solvents readily miscible with water, e.g. acetone, should be treated with suspicion, as they can take up water from the atmosphere. Obviously the exact choice of solvent will vary considerably with the finish composition. [Pg.200]

This specification covers a complete silicone alkyd painting system for structural steel. This system is suitable for use on parts or structures exposed in Environmental Zone 2A (frequently wet by fresh water), including high hiunidity, infrequent immersion, and mild chemical atmospheres. The primary virtue of this system is the exterior durability and minimum deterioration of the silicone alkyd finish as shown by chalk resistance, gloss retention, and color retention. In addition, the finish paint allows for a choice of colors. [Pg.820]
