Alkenylsilver compounds

Although finding relatively wider synthetic use than the alkenylsilver compounds, examples of reactions of the perfluoroalkenylsilver compounds are limited to a handful of reactions, including protolysis, bromination, dimerisation, methylation, and silylation (Schemes 1.28 and 1.29).69,70... 

Alkenylsilver compounds have been prepared from more electropositive element organometals, such as tetraalkenyl-lead. While these compounds are more stable thermally than the alkylsilver species, they are air and moisture sensitive (Table 2). Complete decomposition of styrenylsilver, for example, takes several days at room temperature. Metallic silver and polystyrene are formed. 

Alkenylsilver compounds are more thermally stable than alkylsilver compounds. This has allowed the isolation of a few genuine representatives of this class of compounds. 

Reaction of silver nitrate with tetravinyllead at —78 °C yields vinylsilver as an almost insoluble material, which is stable up to about — 30 °C33. Other simple alkenylsilver compounds AgR, for example isobutenylsilver [R = (CH3)2C=CH]34,35 and styrylsilver (R = C6H5—CH=CH)36, have been obtained by the reaction between silver ions and the corresponding alkenyltriethyllead compounds at low temperatures. Similar to perfluoroalkylsilver compounds perfluorinated alkenylsilver complexes possess a remarkably high thermal stability. The compounds can be obtained by addition of silver fluoride to perfluoroalkynes (equation 15)38 or perfluoroallene (equation 16)39. Compound 15 has been used as precursor for the deposition of silver films by plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition40 or thermal MOCVD41. 

The synthesis of alkenylsilver tributylphosphine complexes [(BusPjAgR], where R = cis- and lraw5 -l-propenyl (CH3CH=CH) or cis- and trans-2-butenyl [CH3CH=C(CH3)j, have been accomplished by treatment of the tetrameiic silver iodide tributylphosphine complex with the relevant propenyl- and butenylUthium compounds. ...
