Alkaline surface polymerisation

The chemistry of cyanoacrylate adhesives contains no co-reactants but can polymerise at room temperature on any substrate that is exposed to atmospheric moisture or alkaline surfaces. Another reason for adhesive failure might be excessively fast cure. Cyanoacrylates will sometimes cure so rapidly on an alkaline surface that they polymerise before they have a chance to properly adhere to the surface. A glazed or glossy appearance to the failed cyanoacrylate is often an indication that the adhesive has cured too quickly. Plated metals sometimes have traces of alkalinity remaining on the surface and washing with an aqueous cleaner can rectify the situation. [Pg.151]

Hydrothermal synthesis of the non-uniform silica gel used for preparative chromatography proceeds in a different fashion. Sodium silicate (IMa2Si03),1 obtained by alkaline fusion of very pure sand, is acidified to yield orthosilicic acid (Si(0H)4). This unstable acid initially dimerises then condenses further to yield a gel with a hydroxylated surface. Under conditions of controlled polymerisation, a hydrogel is obtained which is further calcinated to yield a very dense silica gel (xerogel). Some of the processes involved here are of the same type as those used to produce microspheres for analytical chromatography. [Pg.52]
