Measurement of the infrared (IR) absorption cannot be used to evaluate the anisotropy of the alignment layer of actual display devices because their substrates are made of glass and are not transparent to IR radiation. However, optical retardation measurements using ellipsometry for visible light can evaluate the anisotropy of a thin membrane, and can be used to evaluate the alignment of the molecules in the alignment material after rubbing [5, 23, 24, 29, 50, 51].

Some of these materials display the potentially chiral ferroelectric SmC phase in addition to a SmA or cholesteric mesophase. Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD). Liquid crystal displays, once limited to small devices such as calculators, are now displacing color CRT (cathode ray tube) displays in commercial quantities. The ability to fabricate these display devices at high quality and at low cost is partially due to the wider spread use of photopolymer-based materials. Photopolymer technology is being used for the alignment of liquid crystal (LC) elements (49), the orientation of ferroelectric materials (50), the synthesis of LC polymers (57) and the manufacture of color filters for liquid crystal display applications (52).
