Cell expansion algae

The effects of phytohormones on growth and development in the algae were summarized by Lang (1965). Since then a great deal has been published on the occurrence of phytohormones and their effects on cell expansion in the... [Pg.57]

There are numerous reports of stimulation of cell expansion and cell division by auxin, GA, and cytokinin in a variety of multicellular and in some unicellular algae. Enhancement of growth by these higher plant hormones has been reported in the Chlorophyceae, Charophyceae, Xanthophyceae, Phaeophyceae, Rhodo-phyceae, and Cyanophyceae (see discussion by Augier 1976c). [Pg.58]

Within a photosynthetic unicellular alga function mechanisms which control the integrated activities of its nucleus and cytoplasm and vnthin its cytoplasm of the chloroplasts, mitochondria, micro-somes, ER membranes and hyaloplasm. Within the multicellular organism extra-cellular controls determine the distribution and activity of centres of organised cell division (meristems), of organised cell expansion and of the specialised tissues concerned with photosynthesis, the bio-synthesis of particular metabolic products, solute and water absorption, translocation and so on. Thus, superimposed upon the nutritive inter-relationships of the specialised structures within the cells we now have nutritive inter-relationships between cells fulfilling different and partial functions in the economy of the whole organism. [Pg.284]
