An aldehyde is an organic compound containing the —CHO group. The simplest member is formaldehyde, HCHO. 

A cyanohydrin is an organic compound that contains both a cyanide and a hydroxy group on an aUphatic section of the molecule. Cyanohydrias are usually a-hydroxy nitriles which are the products of base-cataly2ed addition of hydrogen cyanide to the carbonyl group of aldehydes and ketones. The lUPAC name for cyanohydrias is based on the a-hydroxy nitrile name. Common names of cyanohydrias are derived from the aldehyde or ketoae from which they are formed (Table 1). 

Whereas aldehydes and ketones are one of the most important classes of organic compounds containing multiple bonds, no species with a E=0 double bond with E = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb could be isolated as a pure compound in the condensed phase148b 161. The ger-manone Tbt(Tip)Ge=0 116 prepared by Tokitoh s group could be detected in solution only. At room temperature, however, by insertion of the Ge=0 bond into a C—Si bond of an ortho-Bsi substituent of the employed Tbt ligand, it rearranges quickly to a mixture of diastereomeric benzogermacyclobutanes (equation 13)162. 

A second reason for the vast number of organic compounds is that carbon atoms can form stable bonds with other elements. Several families of organic compounds (alcohols, aldehydes, ketones, esters, and ethers) contain oxygen atoms bonded to carbon. Others contain nitrogen, sulfur, or halogens. The presence of these elements confers a wide variety of new chemical and physical properties on an organic compound.
