In the presence of gallium chloride, aluminum bromide, aluminum chloride, and ferric chloride, benzoyl azide is decomposed according to eq 2. Here complex formation is very fast, and the decomposition of the complex is the ratedetermining step. The halides do not complex with the phenyl isocyanate formed and, as a consequence, they are not consumed in the reaction. As long as benzoyl azide is in excess, the concentration of the complex is equal to the halide concentration and remains constant. The experimentally determined pseudo-zero-order rate constant depends therefore upon the first power of the initial halide concentration. When, however, the reaction is at a stage where the azide is no longer in excess, the rate of the reaction becomes first order with respect to benzoyl azide and zero order with respect to halide. Prey found that the pyridinium salt of aluminum bromide (2 Py 1 AlBrs) is an excellent reagent for cleavage of phenol ethers diphenyl ether alone resisted cleavage by the reagent. A solution of 33 g. of pyridine in 50 ml. of benzene is stirred and a solution of 50g. of AlBra in 300 ml. of benzene is added the precipitated salt is purified by solution in pyridine and precipitation with ether. For demethylation, a mixture of the ether wi th 3 parts of salt is heated at 220°. [Pg.745]

A quantitative study was made of the products resulting from the reaction of air with aluminum bromide dissolved in n-butane in molal proportions C4Hio/AlBrs/Oj=100/9.5/0.30. It was found that all of the oxygen entered the reaction the gases which were pumped off, to 10 nun. of mercury at liquid nitrogen temperature, consisted of 95% nitrogen and... [Pg.208]

Effect of water. It was found (Section II, 2d) that by contacting 1 mole equivalent of water with 1 mole equivalent aluminum bromide (AlBrs), 1 mole equivalent hydrogen bromide is liberated, while all of the aluminum bromide reacted (Wackher and Pines, 11). The reaction proceeded probably according to eq. (16). [Pg.221]

Anhydrous aluminum bromide, AlBr, forms colorless trigonal crystals and exists in dimeric form, in the crystal and liquid phases (1). Dissociation... [Pg.149]

Aluminum bromide hexahydrate /77< 4-//-4J, AlBr 6H20, may be made by dissolving aluminum or aluminum hydroxide in hydrobromic acid [10035-10-6] HBr. This white, crystalline solid is precipitated from aqueous solution. [Pg.149]

The brownish-red cloud in the photograph is excess bromine. The reactions product, which is solid particles of aluminum bromide (AlBrs), settles on the bottom of the beaker. [Pg.284]

The structure for ALBre (Fig, 6. Ih) is assumed by both AliBr and AljCIs in the gas phase. In the solid, however, Ihe structures can best be described as closest packed arrays of halogen atoms (or ions) with aluminum atoms (or ions) in tetrahedral or octahedral holes. In solid aluminum bromide Ihe aluminum atoms are found in pairs in adjacent icisahedral holes. In solid ahuninum cMoride, atoms are found In one-iliiid of the octahedral holes. [Pg.247]
