The MSG-3 process thus requires quantitative data on inspection reliability to function correctly. In addition, no rule-based prediction system can foresee all possible malfunctions, so that once an aircraft is in service, regirlar detailed inspections are made of the whole structure to discover any unexpected cracks. When such new cracks are foimd, the information is typically shared among manufacturers, operators, and regirlators in the form of supplementary inspections. Similar considerations apply to other failure modes, such as corrosion. 

This chapter has discussed the modes of damage that can occur with polymer composites. Failure occurs progressively under tension, compression, or shear, and polymer composites are particularly prone to low-velocity impacts that may result in damage that is not obvious to the naked eye. This emphasizes the need to test polymer composite aircraft structures both at the time of manufacture and while in service. The methodologies currently employed for NDT, NDI, and NDE of aircraft structures have been detailed, and examples have been shown. The precise method used for a given application will depend on the economic cost, subject to a sufficient probability of detection of any damage. 

Two types of aircraft are taken in account Lear jet 23 (twin-jet of 5.7 tons) and Cessna 210 (single-engined aircraft of 1500 kg). Generally NPP sites are outside vicinity of airports where fall frequency is higher, furthermore civil or military reglementation forbid flights at a low altitude. Solutions consist in reinforcement of civil structures and separation of safety trains to avoid common mode failures.
