A hot-water heating system forces water into pipes, or arrangements of pipes called registers that warm from contact with warm water. Air in the room warms from contact with the pipes. Usually, the pipes are on the floor of a room so that warmer, less dense air around the pipes rises somewhat like a helium-filled balloon rises in air. The warmer air cools as it mixes with cooler air near the ceiling and falls as its density increases. This process is called convection and the moving air is referred to as convection current. The process of convection described here is pipe-to-air and usually does a better job of heating evenly than in an air-to-air convection system—the circulation of air by fans as in a forced-air heating system.

Perimeter Heating - A term applied to warm-air heating systems that deliver heated air to rooms by means of registers or baseboards located along exterior walls. 

Radiant Floor - A type of radiant heating system where the building floor contains channels or tubes through which hot fluids such as air or water are circulated. The whole floor is evenly heated. Thus, the room heats from the bottom up. Radiant floor heating eliminates the draft and dust problems associated with forced air heating systems. 

Air can also be used as the heat transfer fluid in collectors built for this purpose. The heat store in this case will most often be a rock bin or a rock bed, that is, an insulated container filled with crushed rocks or pebbles (called a bin if it is an upright container or a bed if it is a shallow layer under the floor). The solar heated air will warm the rocks, and at a later time the air flow in the distribution circuit will remove this heat and transport it to the spaces where it is needed.
