The shorter shaft and disc assembly in the horizontal mill is capable of higher speed without destructive vibration (3400 ft,/min or 17 meters/sec,). The high shear rates enhance media action for particle size reduction (impact action) and agglomerate separation (shear action).

Very finely divided minerals may be difficult to purify by flotation since the particles may a ere to larger, undesired minerals—or vice versa, the fines may be an impurity to be removed. The latter is the case with Ii02 (anatase) impurity in kaolin clay [87]. In carrier flotation, a coarser, separable mineral is added that will selectively pick up the fines [88,89]. The added mineral may be in the form of a floe (ferric hydroxide), and the process is called adsorbing colloid flotation [90]. The fines may be aggregated to reduce their loss, as in the addition of oil to agglomerate coal fines [91]. 

When the recycle soot in the feedstock is too viscous to be pumped at temperatures below 93°C, the water—carbon slurry is first contacted with naphtha carbon—naphtha agglomerates are removed from the water slurry and mixed with additional naphtha. The resultant carbon—naphtha mixture is combined with the hot gasification feedstock which may be as viscous as deasphalter pitch. The feedstock carbon—naphtha mixture is heated and flashed, and then fed to a naphtha stripper where naphtha is recovered for recycle to the carbon—water separation step. The carbon remains dispersed in the hot feedstock leaving the bottom of the naphtha stripper column and is recycled to the gasification reactor. 

One other method used to size the phosphate ore is disk agglomeration. After preparation, the disk agglomerates are sintered at high temperature in separate process steps, followed by screening to the appropriate size specifications.
