The FDA is headed by Commissioner Jane E. Henney, M.D. Dr. Henney was appointed FDA Commissioner in November 1998 after a 2-year period during which FDA did not have a commissioner. Prior to her position with FDA, Dr. Henney served as the first Vice President of the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center from 1994 to 1998. Before joining UNM, she served as the Deputy Commissioner for Operations at the FDA from 1992 to 1994. Her other past academic administrative positions have included Vice Chancellor for Health Programs and Policy at the University of Kansas and Acting Director of the University of Kansas Mid America Cancer Center from 1985 to 1992. She also served as Interim Dean of the School of Medicine at the University of Kansas from 1987 to 1989. From 1976 to 1985, Dr. Henney held various positions at the NCI. From 1980 to 1985, she was the Deputy Director of the NCI.

The Lebanese Christian Maronite Order of the Holy Virgin established this Catholic institution in 1978 after the American Model of higher education. It started with the schools of business Administration and Computer Science. In 1979, the engineering program was started with 2 preparatory years in Lebanon and the rest in the USA.
