Afghanistan invasion

Rumi (1207-1273), Sufi poet and mystic. Jalal al-Din Muhammad Rumi was bom in the region today known as Afghanistan. His family fled the Mogul invasion to Konya, Turkey, where he spent most of his life. 

If one event more than any other finally persuaded the supporters of gas that it was time to rearm, it was the invasion of Afghanistan.

See especially Stephen Sestanovich, US Policy Toward the Soviet Union, 1970-1979 The Impact of China, which argues that improved U.S.-PRC relations had relatively little effect on U.S.-Soviet relations during the 1970S and in fact failed to restrain Moscow s adventurism, which culminated in the invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. 

The Associated Press reported in September that at least 1,645 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan since the U.S.-led invasion in 2001. Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 13,609 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department. By the 1970s, both sides were militarily fatigued and sought to reach a political accommodation. A period of detente followed, in which Strategic Arms Limitation Talks took place, and the US opened diplomatic relations with the People s Republic of China. Unfortunately, detente collapsed at the end of the decade following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
