Aerogels Cherenkove detectors

Therc arc four aerogel Cerenkov detectors required for the experiment. They were designed at the University of Kyoto. Tests of prototype have been made at KEK for ICl, IC2, and FDl which give 4-5 photo-electron detection efficiency. The large (1.2 m x 2.0 m) Cherenkov detector, BC, is under construction and is scheduled to be shipped to the AGS in August. This large Cherenkov detector will be followed by a hodoscope, BP, which is under development at the University of New Mexico.

The definite, undisputed applications of aerogels remain in Cherenkov radiation detectors, thermal insulation and in space exploration. But, as evidenced by this Aerogels Handbook, it is expected to be a short matter of time before the concerted efforts of industry, academia and government lead to the wide use of those remarkable materials in construction, transportation, health care and the National Defense.
