In aerobic processes, the mean sludge residence time is typically 5 to 10 days. The hydraulic residence time is typically 0.2 to 0.3 days. Suspended growth aerobic processes are capable of removing up to 95 percent of BOD. 

The basic theoretical aspects of aerobic and anaerobic processes relevant for wastewater in sewer networks are focused on in Chapters 2 and 3. Figure 5.1 briefly illustrates an important difference between an aerobic and an anaerobic process exemplified with the transformations of protein in a wastewater sample originating from a sewer system. Under aerobic conditions, suspended protein components were significantly increased, and the soluble part was correspondingly reduced. This change is interpreted as the result of a growth process of the bacterial biomass. Under anaerobic conditions, no significant transformations of soluble and particulate protein took place.
