Adsorption on polymers. Thrombin and Antithrombin contain, respectively, 7 and 4 tryptophan and several tyrosine residues. The fluorescence spectrum of the T-AT complex, already known (20), is centered around 332 nm, due to Trp residues in a non polar environment.

The adsorption kinetics of a mixture of surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate and sodium laurate) onto a vacuum-deposited AI2O3 film and diphenylchlorosi-lane [322] and phthalocyanines [323] on chemically deposited silicon oxide on silicon was also studied [324], Coated ATR was also effective in the IR spectroscopic studies of adsorption on polymers (Section 7.7). 

Another advantage of the GSC method is its applicability for a short time of contact between adsorbate and adsorbent, which is not possible for static methods. This applies to measurements of adsorption on catalysts and studies of catalyst specific surface area at higher temperatures, close to the working temperature as well as adsorption on polymers. In this latter case static methods do not distinguish between adsorption and absorption.

The conventional spectrometer with a dispersive prism or grating has been largely superseded by the Fourier transform (FTIR) technique. This uses a moving mirror in an interferometer to produce an optical transform of the infrared signal. Numerical Fourier analysis gives the relation of intensity and frequency, that is, the IR spectrum. FTIR can be used to analyze gases, liquids and solids with minimal preparation in short times. FTIR has been applied to the study of many systems, including adsorption on polymer surfaces, chemical modification and irradiation of polymers and oxidation of rubbers [36]. The application of infrared spectroscopy to the study of polymers has been reviewed by Bower and Maddams [35]. 

It should be noted here that this chapter concentrates primarily on the retention mechanisms and the factors that affect retention levels. An extensive analysis of the effects of dynamic retention on polymer effluent profiles is not presented here since this is covered in Chapter 7 along with other polymer transport effects. Issues such as the effects of linear and non-linear isotherms and equilibrium and non-equilibrium adsorption on polymer core effluents are also discussed in more detail in Chapter 7, in which the appropriate polymer transport equations are developed.
