Some other studies showed that the combination of the three polymorphs with reduced crystallite size and high surface area can lead to the best photocatalysts for 4-chlorophenol degradation [37], or that particles in the dimension range 25-40 nm give the best performances [38]. Therefore, many elements contribute to the final photocatalytic activity and sometimes the increased contribution of one parameter can compensate for the decrease of another one. For example, better photocatalytic activity can be obtained even if the surface area decreases, with a concomitant increase in the crystallinity of the sample, which finally results in a higher number of electron-hole pairs formed on the surface by UV illumination and in their increased lifetime (slower recombination) [39]. Better crystallinity can be obtained with the use of ionic liquids during the synthesis [39], with a consequent increase of activity. [Pg.96]

Evaluations of the UI work test in South Carolina (Corson et al. 1985) and in Maryland (Klepinger et al. 1998) found that a stronger UI work test, achieved by requiring reporting of job search contacts and validation of contacts through cooperation between UI and the PES, leads to significantly shorter periods of compensated joblessness. The surfaces of metal oxides and their H2 chemisorption characteristics have been far less studied than the surfaces of elemental metals and semiconductors [113,133]. Cation surface states are formed on ideal oxide surfaces at about 2 eV below the bottom ofthe conduction band. The charge of the surface ions is found to be reduced compared with that of the bulk ions and this leads to an enhanced co valency at the surface. The reduction amounts to less than 10 % for oxides of simple metals such as MgO and to 20-30% for transition metal oxides. Cluster and slab calculations reveal that special surface state bands with metallic character can be formed on polar surfaces by charge compensation effects. To what extent the metallic band accounts for special catalytic activity is not yet known [114]. [Pg.102]

The small power size of one HTR-Module unit (200 MWth) and the low power density leads principally to high specific investment costs compared to bigger reactors. However, this effect is compensated to a large degree by technical simplifications, (e.g. by omission of a full pressure containment and active safety systems). Additionally the high proof and control effort for nuclear components can be reduced drastically due to the fact that most components of the HTR-Module (e.g. water steam cycle, He-blower) are not safety relevant. The proof effort could be restricted mainly to the fuel elements. A further cost reduction can be reached by manufacturing in larger quantities of modular units. [Pg.357]
