Casting acrylic

In bulk polymerization, no solvents are employed and the monomer acts as the solvent and continuous phase in which the process is carried out. Commercial bulk processes for acrylic polymers are used mainly m the production of sheets, rods and tubes. Rulk processes are also used on a much smaller scale in the preparation of dentures and novelty items and in the preservation of biological specimens. Acrylic castings are produced by pouring monomers or partially polymerized sirups into suitably designed molds and completing the polymerization. Acrylic bulk... [Pg.16]

Literature continues to be rather extensive on this subject since the 1930s. A summarization is provided in this section. Products fabricated include sheets, films, rods and tubes, and embedment. Acrylic castings usually consist of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) or copolymers of this ester as the major component with small amounts of other monomers to modify the properties (Chapter 2). Adding acrylates or higher methacrylates lowers the heat deflection temperature and hardness and improves thermoformability and solvent cementing capability, with some loss in resistance to weathering. Dimethacrylates or other crosslinking monomers increase the resistance to solvents and moisture. [Pg.401]

Sources of ignition must be kept away from these materials, and adequate, reliable ventilation and means of removing vapors must be provided in storage and processing areas. Their exists with the manufacturer of acrylic castings the situations of toxicity, flammability,... [Pg.402]

The outstanding optical properties of acrylic casting make acrylic sheets invaluable in applications where excellent transparency and resistance to UV are imperative. The fabrication of acrylic sheets therefore predominates in the acrylic casting process. Cast acrylic resins also account for most of the embodiments used for decorative or study purposes. In this case, hard polymers of ethyl or methyl methacrylate are used. Rods and tubes are also prepared from acrylic castings. [Pg.313]
