Glycerol acetals

Triglycerides are nontoxic, biodegradable and renewable molecules which are being used as substrate for the synthesis of a variety of useful molecules such as glycerol esters, fatty acid alkyl esters, triacetin, ketals, acetals, glycerol carbonates, etc (Scheme 1). 

A variety of solvents, monomers, medicines, perfumes, and explosives are made from esters of nitric acid. Ethyl acetate, //-butyl acetate, iso-butyl acetate, glycerol trinitrate, pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), glycol dinitrate, and cellulose nitrate are examples of such reactions.

They observed that Is/In increased with M, reaching an asymptotic level at M = 10 . Ie/Im increased linearly with rio in methanol-ethylene glycol mixtures - both poor solvents for the polymer - whereas at low viscosities, this plot was curved for ethyl acetate-glycerol triacetate mixtures. To the extent that cyclization depends upon coil expansion, as reflected in the intrinsic viscosity [n] of the polymer, these differences should disappear in a plot of no [n] Ie/Im vs [n] or no. While these plots show some scatter, the data are best fit by a line of zero slope. This result suggests that in this system, solvency factors which affect [n] through coil expansion have the same effect on the average (internal) cyclization rate of the polymer.
