Zinc sulphide colloid

There are new ideas and experiments on the rTCA cycle. A group from Harvard University studied some reaction steps in the rTCA cycle which were kept going by mineral photochemistry. The authors assumed that solar UV radiation can excite electrons in minerals, and that this energy is sufficient to initiate the corresponding reaction steps. In this photocatalytic process, semiconductor particles were suspended in water in the presence of a zinc sulphide colloid (sphalerite) the experiments were carried out in a 500 mL reaction vessel at 288 K. Ammonium sulphide solution white precipitate of zinc sulphide, ZnS, from neutral or alkaline solutions it is insoluble in excess reagent, in acetic acid, and in solutions of caustic alkalis, but dissolves in dilute mineral adds. The precipitate thus obtained is partially colloidal it is difficult to wash and tends to run through the filter paper, particularly on washing. To obtain the zinc sulphide in a form which can be readily filtered, the precipitation is conveniently carried out in boiling solution in the presence of excess ammonium chloride, the precipitate is washed with dilute ammonium chloride solution containing a little ammonium sulphide. [Pg.273]

Elemental sulphur can be determined simply by solvent extraction with chloroform according to Boulegue and Popoff (1919) and Gagnon et al. (1996). The chloroform phase is analysed by UV spectrophotometry at 270 nm. The operation must be carried out in an oxygen-free atmosphere. The oxidation of sulphide can also be avoided by precipitation with zinc acetate. In this case the ZnS (if not in colloidal form) may be filtered off and and extracted with chloroform since the elemental sulphur is copredpitated with the zinc sulphide. Aluminium and magnesium selenides are very similar light brown powders, unstable in air. Zinc and iron (ferrous) selenides are more stable in air, the zinc compound being citron-yellow and the iron compound black and metallic in appearance.8 The latter becomes brown in air owing to oxidation. Ferric selenide is difficult to obtain pure. Cadmium selenide, which is dark brown, is very stable in colour and is used as a pigment. With thallium, selenium is said to form three distinct compounds,9 but analyses of these compounds have led to discordant results. The selenides of aluminium, chromium and uranium cannot be prepared in the wet way. Nickel selenide, unlike the sulphide, shows no tendency to form a colloidal solution. [Pg.314]

If the reagent is added in excess, a dark-brown colloidal solution is formed which runs through the filter paper. If the colloidal solution is boiled or if it is rendered slightly acid with acetic acid and boiled, the colloidal solution (hydrosol) is coagulated and can then be filtered.
