Typical of the machines at which young persons should not work without proper training and supervision were listed in the Dangerous Machines (Training of Young Persons) Order 1954 While this Order has been revoked, it does provide a useful list of machines at which special precautions are necessary if young persons are employed. 

Any persons who supervise the use of work equipment should also receive information, instruction and training. The training of young persons is especially important with the need for special risk assessments under the Management Regulations. 

Paragraph 3 does not prevent the employment of a young person who is not a child where this is necessary for training, or where the young person will be supervised by a competent person and where any risk will be reduced to the lowest level that is reasonably practicable. These provisions are without prejudice to any other provisions or restrictions on employment arising elsewhere. 

The European member states may authorize derogations from these prohibitions in the case of adolescents if such work is indispensable for their vocational training, provided that work is performed under the supervision of a competent person. Concerning hazardous chemicals, this will mean in practice that work of young people with such substances (for example experiments with carcinogens in a laboratory) is permitted if...
