In the Quaternary alluvial aquifers of the Hetao plain, 96 % of the sampled wells in the Wuyuan area and 69 % of the sampled wells in the Alashan area had arsenic 50 pgL-1. The highest arsenic concentrations were in 15- to 30-m deep tube wells with a peak value of 1350 pg L-1 (Smedley, 2005). In the Ba Men area, 30% of the sampled wells had arsenic 50 pgL-1 with a maximum concentration of 1800 pgL-1
