Preferred monomers are alkyl (meth)acrylates, such as butyl acrylate, acrylic acid, and y-methacryloxypropyl triethoxysilane. A reactive emulsifier is used which refers to an emulsifier that has an emulsifying capability and is radically polymerizable. 

PMMA-Zr02 nanohybrid particles were synthesized via in-situ polymerization in the presence of surface-modified Zr02 (surface modification using a Y-methacryloxypropyl-trimethoxysilane [186, 187]).
