Xenon tetroxide

Oxides. Two oxides of xenon are known xenon trioxide [13776-58-4], XeO, and xenon tetroxide [12340-14-6], XeO (Table 1). Xenon trioxide is most efftcientiy prepared by the hydrolysis of XeE (47) or by the reaction of XeE with HOPOE2 (48). The XeO molecule has a trigonal pyramidal shape Xe—O, 176(3) pm (49), and XeO is tetrahedral with Xe—O, 173.6(2) pm (50). Xenon tetroxide is prepared by the interaction of concentrated sulfuric acid with sodium or barium perxenate, Na XeO, Ba2XeO ( )- Both oxides are thermodynamically unstable, explosive soHds which must be... [Pg.22]

Xenon Tetroxide. See in Vol 8, 053-L and in the following Addn/Re/ H. Selig et al, Xenon Tetroxide Preparation and Some Properties , Sdence 143, 1322-3 (1964) [ The compd is reported as a yel solid at below -78.5°. The IR spectrum of the vapor shows it to have tetrahedral symmetry]... [Pg.397]

Decomposition may be explosive, even at —40°C [1], Solutions stable at —30°C can be formed in hydrogen fluoride, bromine pentafluoride and chlorosulfonyl fluoride. But melting solvents onto solid xenon tetroxide at —196 C often causes explosions if performed too rapidly [2]. [Pg.1966]

Xenon tetroxide is a highly unstable and explosive gas formed by the action of concentrated H2S04 on barium perxenate. It is tetrahedral (Xe—O = 1.736 A), according to electron diffraction studies. [Pg.593]

Other strong oxidants (e.g., persulfate, percar-bonate, peracetic acid, xenon tetroxide) can also be used for specific applications, but they are not discussed here. We will now discuss oxidations at high temperatures. [Pg.247]

Of course it may well prove possible to isolate xenon tetroxide despite its endothermicity and undoubtedly some effort will be made towards this end. The tetroxide should be a regular tetrahedral molecular species and should be volatile. [Pg.206]
