It has been almost twenty years since DesMarteau reported the first example of a compound with a xenon-nitrogen bond (81) and approximately ten years since... 

Schrobilgen published the first structural evidence for this bond type (82), In the intervening time, the majority of new compounds with a xenon-nitrogen bond have resulted from the exploitation of the Lewis acid properties of noble gas cations by Schrobilgen and co-workers (83-88). These workers have further exploited these properties to prepare the first compounds with a krypton-nitrogen bond (87,89). The majority of these new Xe-N and Kr-N compounds are solution species they have been characterized predominately by multinuclear NMR and vibrational spectroscopy and are generally too unstable to be isolated in a pure form.

Stable noble gas compounds are restricted to those of xenon. Most of these compounds involve bonds between xenon and the most electronegative elements, fluorine and oxygen. More exotic compounds containing Xe—S, Xe—H, and Xe—C bonds can be formed under carefully controlled conditions, for example in solid matrices at liquid nitrogen temperature. The three Lewis structures below are examples of these compounds in which the xenon atom has a steric munber of 5 and trigonal bipyramidal electron group geometry.

Another example of crystals containing more than one component is provided by the clathrates. In clathrates of, 3-quinol, three quinol molecules are hydrogen bonded together to form an approximately spherical cavity of radius 4 A (Figure 15.13). Any molecule of appropriate size such as oxygen, nitrogen, krypton, xenon, methane, sulfur dioxide, or methyl alcohol can be trapped, and if it is not disordered within the clathrate, its location and orientation can be determined in the crystalline state by X-ray diffraction methods.
