In 1984, the World Health Organization (WHO) published Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality (46) with the goal of the protection of public health by the reduction or elimination of constituents in drinking water that are known to be hazardous to health and well being.

The World Health Organization has established an international drinking-water guideline for di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate of 8 tg/L (WHO, 1993). The Environmental Protection Agency (1998) has set the maximum contaminant level (MCL) for di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in drinking-water at 6 tg/L in the United States. 

The World Health Organization has established an international drinking-water guideline for carbon tetrachloride of 2 pg/1. (WHO, 1993).
