Wire rope splicing

Splicing. Splicing wire rope requires considerable skill, and the instructions for splicing wire rope will be found in the catalogues of most of the wire-rope manufacturers, where the operation sequence is carefully described, and many clear illustrations are presented. These illustrations give, in fact, most of the information needed. 

Minimum sling lengths, (i) Cable laid and 6X19 and 6 X 37 slings shall have minimum clear length of wire rope 10 times the component rope diameter between splices, sleeves or end fittings. 

Eye or Eye splice means a ioop with or without a thimbie at the end of a wire rope. 

Swaged attachments or spliced eyes on wire suspension ropes shall not be used unless they are made by the wire rope manufacturer or a qualified person. 

Wire ropes shall be continuous and without splices between anchors. 

C) If the deficiency is localized, the problem is corrected by severing the wire rope in two the undamaged portion may continue to be used. Joining lengths of wire rope by splicing is prohibited. If a rope is shortened under this paragraph, the employer must ensure that the drum will still have two wraps of wire when the load and/or boom is in its lowest position. 

NOTE Repairs. Wire rope used in tiedown assemblies shall not be repaired or spliced. (Eye splices and back splices are acceptable.)... 

Wire suspension ropes shall not be joined together except through the use of eye splice thimbles connected with shackles or coverplates and bolts.
