Combustion occurs over a larger range in the gasifier which is almost homogeneous in temperature at about 1,000°C. Because of the nature of the fluidised bed there is a relatively high level of unconverted carbon present in the ash. The ash and unconverted coal (char) exit the bottom of the vessel. This gasifier is represented by gasifiers of the Winkler type. 

Four gasification processes are currently in large-scale commercial operation the Lurgi moving-bed dry ash system, the Koppers-Totzek (GKT) entrained system, the Texaco entrained-flow system, and the Winkler fluidized-bed system. More detailed discussions of individual installations appear later in this section. Table 3-1 summarizes the total number of gasifiers of each type.
