Wild Vitis species

The wild Vitis species are formed through long-term natural selection. Although fruits from the wild species fall short of expectations for human consumption, explorers always selected better ones for domestic cultivation and further breeding for new grapes with better qualities.

The muscadine grape vine was discovered in 1584 growing wild near the Scuppernong River located in the Northeast part of North Carolina (J ) The muscadine grape embraces two species, Vitis munsoniana and Vitis rotundifolia. 

The European colonists of North America found fields of wild grapes when they arrived. However, the first wines made from the American species [Vitis labrusca) were inferior to those made from Old World grapes V. vinifera). Nevertheless, the wild species were much hardier in the climate... 

Northeast The wine grapes growing successfully in the Northeast are cultivars selected from Vitis amurensis, a wild species native to China, and the hybrids derived from crosses between V. amurensis and V. vinifera.
