Finally, this volume pays tribute to the life and work of two recently deceased carbohydrate scientists of note, Roy L. Whistler at the age of almost 98 and, younger by a whole generation. Per J. Garegg at the age of 75. 

There were many different aspects to die life, work, and personality of Roy Whistler. In addition to being a scientist, he was a creator and leader in local, national, and international scientific and professional organizations a bridger of academia and industry a communicator, especially a compiler of the literatiue a promoter an educator and advisor an outdoorsman and above all an achiever. He was quite good at reading the characters and personalities of others and was at heart a very kind person, and bodi of these traits helped him to accomplish what he did.
