What Is Classification

Each hazard class can have up to 5 sub-categories. For instance, carcinogenicity has two categories  

By determining a chemical s hazard class and category, the hazard information that must be provided on the SDS and on the container label is pre-determined by the GHS system. 

In the revised HazCom Standard, OSHA has included information on the general provisions for hazard classification, and has provided Appendixes A and B that address the criteria for each health or physical effect. 

Your employer may rely upon the classification done by the chemical manufacturer or importer. No employer is required to classify chemicals unless they choose not to rely on the classification provided by the chemical manufacturer or importer or unless they are mixing or creating chemicals in the workplace.
