What function for glycolytic oscillations

Although the model for PFK can in principle generate circadian periodicities when the concentration of the enzymes of the system and the source of substrate are sufficiently low, it is doubtful whether glycolytic oscillations are responsible for any circadian rhythm these rhythms appear to originate from regulatory mechanisms involving protein synthesis and its modulation by transcriptional control (Hardin et al., 1990, 1992 Takahashi, 1993 see also chapter 11). 

Ca of a period of the order of 2 min have been reported (Valdeolmillos et al, 1989) their link with insuhn secretion remains to be estabUshed. 

Glycolytic oscillations have recently been demonstrated in yet another type of cell, belonging to the cardiac tissue (O Rourke et al, 1994). Here, the physiological function of glycolytic oscillations is unknown, but it is likely that they may give rise to certain forms of arrhythmia, since they can modulate the membrane potential in these cells. In a similar manner, oscillations of intracellular Ca (see chapter 9) in heart cells provide another source of cardiac arrhythmia.
