Wettability envelop

The three EME coupling agents in Table 1 were analyzed using contact angle measurements to determine their polar and dispersion components of surface tension. From the surface tension data, wettability envelopes were constructed and compared with the surface tension properties of the epoxy coating [4], These data predicted that EME 47 would be wet by the epoxy, but not EME 23. Thus, knowing values of 7 and 7s v for a solid surface enables Equation 2.34 to be solved to yield values of 7K and 71V for liquids which would just completely wet and spread spontaneously on the solid. The diagram which may be constructed from such data is termed a wettability envelope. The accuracy of pycnometry depends on the size and type of pores as well as the wettability of the solids—how well does the fluid envelope the solid and at what time frame. Mercury as a fluid minimizes these limitations and many instruments are available commercially.
