Hills, which are a component of the Western Carpathian Range. The mountain range at Kuriskova is composed of mesozonal to epizonal metamorphic rocks knowm as the Gemericum tectonic unit of the Carpathian belt. There is a nearly continuous, 0.5 to 6.0 km wide and 80 km long zone of Permian rocks along the northern periphery of the tectonic unit in which there are numerous uranium occurrences. [Pg.473]

Naturally occurring phosphate cements are also known. Krajewski [3] cites calcium-based phosphate cements in the Albeian condensed Glauconitic Limestone of the Tatra Mountains in Western Carpathians. In recent years methods have been developed to fabricate calcium phosphate ceramics by direct reaction of calcium compounds and either phosphoric acid or an acid phosphate. The mineralogy of the products has also been well studied. Most of these efforts are directed towards development of calcium-based bioceramics containing calcium phosphate compounds, such as hydroxyapatite. These developments are discussed below. [Pg.143]

We do not know how far the hippopotamus, so common in the Lower and Middle Pleistocene of western and southern Europe, penetrated the Carpathian Basin, but this is (together with that of t)rom) the second occurrence in the thoroughly investigated fauna of the Pleistocene of Hungary. Geologically identical age of the two localities is therefore probable. [Pg.67]

Between the Precambrian-Caledonian area, the Alpino-Carpathian front and Africa occurs the most characteristic central Western European geotectonic unit—the Hercynian (Variscan) orogen. Nevertheless, the area occupied by this orogen does not represent the total original Hercynian space, numerous Hercynian fragments being set within the Alpine orogen. [Pg.140]
