Werner had performed no research on coordination chemistry, and his theory rested on experimental data which had been gathered by others, especially J0rgensen. Werner devoted the rest of his life to the justification of his bold propositions. Not surprisingly, J0rgensen was opposed to the new theory, and during the resulting controversy, conducted without bitterness on either side, many new discoveries were made.
