Once successful venous access has been achieved, the skin incision is created. The incision should be directed along anatomic lines. The skin incision is carried medially and interiorly for approximately 2in.. Once the incision has been carried out, the Weitlaner self-retaining retractor is applied similar to that described for the venous cutdown. The Weitlaner retractor holds tissue under tension as broad-based scalpel strokes are carried around to the surface of the pectoralis muscle. [Pg.133]
