Weight, atomic formula

What factor can be used to transform molar heat capacity into specific heat Ans. The reciprocal of atomic weight (or formula weight). For example. [Pg.280]

The concentrations of electrolyte solutions are generally expressed in chemical units known as milliequivalents (mEq). The milliequivalent weight represents the amount, in milligrams, of a solute equal to 1/1000 of its gram equivalent weight. A milliequivalent is a unit of measurement of the amount of chemical activity of an electrolyte. A milliequivalent unit is related to the total number of ionic charges in solution and it takes the valence of the ions into consideration. Table 5.1 provides valence, atomic and milliequivalent weights, and formulae of selected ions. [Pg.111]

If the only constituents of petroleum were the hydrocarbons, the complexity is further illustrated by the number of potential isomers (i.e., molecules having the same atomic formula) that can exist for a given number of paraffinic carbon atoms and that increases rapidly as molecular weight increases ... [Pg.35]

One important application is to deduce the molecular weight and formula for a gas. Assume you know that the hydrocarbon propylene is, by weight, 85.6% carbon and 14.4% hydrogen. Then the atomic ratios of the com-pound are... [Pg.84]

The first part of Daltons book provided very few examples of compositions expressed in atomic formulas. Nor did he elaborate on his claim, quoted above, that from the relative weights of the ultimate particles or atoms of the bodies. .. their number and weight in various other compounds would appear, in order to assist and to guide future investigations, and to correct their results. The evidence confirming the real usefulness of Daltons conception of atomic weights was first provided by other more experienced chemists. [Pg.251]

The distinctions between the system of equivalents ordinarily employed in this country, and the 2 volume notation adopted in this work, may be thus expressed. In the new system, the atomic weight of carbon is 12, of oxygen is 16, of sulphur is 32 and similarly with selenium and tellurium all the other atomic weights are unaltered. The atomic expressions for all bodies not containing carbon, oxygen, or sulphur, are unchanged thus, H, N, HCl, KI, NH, c. When in an atomic formula the atoms of carbon, oxygen, and sulphur, form even numbers, these numbers are halved thus, alcohol becomes G H O, ethyl... [Pg.196]

Just as a mole of atoms is based on the atomic mass, a mole of a compound is based on the formula mass or formula weight. The formula weight is calculated by addition of the masses of all the atoms or ions of which the unit is composed. To calculate the formula weight, the formula imit must be known. [Pg.143]

SCCPs are chlorinated derivatives of n-aUcanes having carbon chain lengths ranging from 10 to 13 and 1-13 chlorine atoms ( 16-78% by weight, molecular formula C (2x-y+i)C -y, where x = 10-13 and y - 1-13). Chlorination of the n-aUcane feedstock yields extremely complex mixtures, owing to the many possible positions for the chlorine atoms, and standard analytical methods do not permit their separation and identification. Thus the commercial mixture would fall under the proposed identity for SCCPs specified here. [Pg.31]

RHODIUM (metal fume and insoluble compounds, as Rh)(The atomic formula for rhodium metal is Rh. The atomic weight for rhodium metal is 102.91. Insoluble rhodium compounds have variable molecular formulas and variable formula weights, depending upon the specific compound.)... [Pg.871]

The terms equivalent or combining weight and formula weight have been used in place of atoms and molecules as not involving the theories of atoms and molecules. While these terms may have been useful at a time when the existence of atoms and molecules were to some extent hypothetical, the proof of their existence in recent years has made the use of such terms unnecessary. [Pg.3]

Thus, the molecular weight of a particular compound must be calculated from the atomic formula or read off the reagent bottle. [Pg.151]

Berthelot was a close friend of Renan, to whom he owed some knowledge of gnosticism, turned to account in his study of alchemy (see p. 467), and the religious doubt then widespread in France. Berthelot s scepticism extended to the atomic theory he once remarked of atoms Wurtz has seen them. He used the old atomic weights and formulae (water HO, etc.), until 1891 structural formulae first appeared in his Thermochimie in 1897. He began work... [Pg.466]
