The increased toughness was accompanied by increased fracture strengths of 700-800 MPa versus <400 MPa in unreinforced alumina. The strength improvements are summarized in Fig. 8. As before, the data is summarized from a number of reports. Just as importantly, the strength improvements are retained to elevated temperatures as shown in Fig. 9, unlike some othertoughened ceramic systems. The Weibull modulus of an alumina-20 vol.% SiC whisker composite has been reported to be in the range of 10-13 [9].
