The classic symptoms of depression are listed in Table 12.1, which is based on DSM-IV criteria. For a diagnosis of major depressive disorder, most of these symptoms must be present, including the first two (APA, 2000). These symptoms should be of sufficient intensity and chronic duration (at least 2 weeks) to cause clinically significant distress and impairment in social or economic functioning. However, they should not be a result of another psychiatric or somatic illness, nor of drug misuse or bereavement. For a diagnosis of mania, the symptoms are a mirror image of those for depression (Table... [Pg.172]

As an additional example of high practical significance, we refer here to copper depKJsits when used in microelectronics, mirrors, and other optical applications. Those deposits have been observed to soften in time even when stored at room temperature for only 4 to 6 weeks. Also, mirrors and other precision objects made of copper will undergo surface deformation after a few months. This type of degradation can be counterbalanced by a suitable metal overcoating. Another, not always practical way is heat treatment to about 300°C. These phenomena are the direct results of microstructural instabilities, often referred to as recrystallization in the copper. It is worth stressing that recrystallization is not limited to copper (5). [Pg.278]

HPI SH is a 32-year-old, moderately obese man brought into the ED by the police after attempting to cut himself with a piece of giass from his bathroom mirror. He said he had to cut himself in order to "let the evil out " In the examination room, SH looked suspiciously at the interviewer and was muttering to himself. His PMH is significant for chronic schizophrenia, HTN, hyperlipidemia, and major depressive disorder. Medications include thioridazine, benztropine, paroxetine, atorvastatin, and metoproiol, although SH states he discontinued ail his medications 3 weeks ago for fear he was being poisoned. [Pg.52]

Figure 8.29 (A) Rupture of inferior wall in a patient after 7 days of inferior Ml due to LCX occlusion. See the echocardiography with great haematic pericardial effusion and the pathological aspect of the rupture. In spite of that, the ECG shows relatively small ECG changes (mild ST-segment elevation in I and VL and mirror image of ST-segment depression in V1-V3 that remains after a week of Ml). FIGURE 8.9 The number of CARRS compounds that have been assayed yearly since 2003 has mirrored advances in chromatography and mass spectrometry. The advent of UPLC has allowed us to routinely increase our capacity to 72 compounds per week with improved turnaround time and data quality. (From Wainhaus, S. et al., Amer. Drug Discov., 2, 6, 2007. With permission.)... [Pg.269]
