Wear silicon nitrides

RT-ILs are also selected as lubricant additives. Usage of ionic liquids as boundary lubricant additives for water has resulted in dramatically reduced running-in periods for silicon nitride materials [70]. When ILs were mixed into a neat mineral oil, the mixture has proven to produce lower wear on aluminum flat than either the oil or the ionic liquid alone [72], which indicates that a small amount of ILs in the mineral oil may function as an anti-wear additive. [Pg.55]

Silicon nitride is prized for its hardness (9 out of 10 on the Mohr scale), its wear resistance, and its mechanical strength at elevated temperatures. It melts and dissociates into the elements at 1,900 °C, and has a maximum use temperature near 1,800 °C in the absence of oxygen and near 1,500 °C under oxidizing conditions.41 It also has a relatively low density (3.185 g/cm3). Unlike silicon carbide, silicon nitride is an electrical insulator. The bulk material has a relatively good stability to aggressive chemicals. This combination of properties underlies its uses in internal combustion engines and jet engines. [Pg.324]

In other useful applications, silicon nitride bearings have been found to offer excellent performance silicon nitride cutting tool inserts are a commercial product wear parts such as sand blast nozzles, seals, and die liners are also commercially produced the superior performance of heat exchangers has been demonstrated and there are also military applications. [Pg.323]

Silicon nitride whiskers are also produced by variations of processing conditions in these S3mthesis methods. Silicon nitride is used for toolbits for cutting cast iron and other high-temperatm% wear parts including burner nozzels. [Pg.39]

In fact Van Wyk ° used something similar to a composite structure for the lubrication of silicon nitride and alumina in plain spherical bearings. He incorporated a 90% molybdenum disulphide/8% molybdenum/2% tantalum compact in holes drilled in the surface of the alumina outer ring, and the details have been described in Chapter 8. The system was very successful, giving a forty times increase in wear life. [Pg.234]
