The electrical conductivity of ethanol is higher than hydroprocessed, conventional fuels. This theoretical safety advantage is of benefit and can help to prevent static buildup or discharge during transfer and loading of fuel. However, the high electrical conductivity can enhance galvanic and electrolytic corrosion of steel, especially in water-contaminated systems. 

Most electrical equipment consists of live or active static parts, and in some cases such as motors, solenoid valves and relays moving mechanical pmts, encased in an enclosme. The electrically live conductors me kept out of touch to prevent electric shock hazmds. The detrimental effects of the atmosphere e.g. rain, sprayed water, fine dust and particles me kept out of contact with the conductors, insulation, bearings and the like. For equipment that is to be used in hazmdous meas there is the additional requirement that gases and vapours should be restricted from entering into the enclosme. There me various basic methods that attempt to ensme that this requirement is achieved at a more or less degree, which generally is dependent upon the Zone of the intended mea of installation.
