Warsaw Society of Friends

The Warsaw Society of Friends of Sciences received its funding from membership fees and donations, the latter sometimes being very generous. The society owned an impressive library collection, acquired mainly by way of donations and available to the wider public. The collections, together with the other property belonging to the society, were confiscated by the Russian authorities in 1832 and the society was then disbanded. [Pg.238]

Pharmacists formed a separate group in the Warsaw Society of Friends of Sciences within the Section of Medicine, Surgery and Pharmacy. [Pg.238]

Among the most generous benefactors was Stanislaw Staszic (1755-1826), a priest educated in Poland and abroad, philosopher and naturalist, president of the Warsaw Society of Friends of Sciences for many years. On his initiative, and mostly from his private funds, an impressive edifice was erected for the Society in Warsaw, later called the Palace of Staszic. [Pg.238]

The most important donor of books for the library was Prince Aleksander Sapieha (1773-1812), a bibliophile, naturalist and traveller. He took interest in chemistry and had a private laboratory. He donated his collection of books to the Warsaw Society of Friends of Sciences and established a fund for the acquisition of new items. [Pg.238]
