W = (force)(distance), unless the object moves some finite distance, no work has been done. [Pg.393]

Work (w) Force acting on an object over a distance. [Pg.4]

Figure 11 Number of publications per year in the CJACS file mentioning DREID-ING, Discover, SHAPES, or UFF. Note that the vertical scale goes up only about one-third as high as that in Figure 10. The search queries for each curve were (1) dreiding(w)force(w)field, (2) (insight or discover) and (simulation or modeling) and hagler, (3) shapes(w)force(w)field, and (4) uff. All of these features are consistent with increasing EN leading to stronger bonds, as expected. However, the noblest and most EN metals, such as Pt and Au, are not as strongly bound as metals such as Ta or W. This is the consequence of the increased number of d-electrons after W, forcing occupancy of antibonding orbitals. This is also seen in the first and second transition series. [Pg.157]

Amonton s law says that the frictional force F between two solids is proportional to the load W, forcing them together, i.e., F = pW [32], and does not depend on the apparent contact area A of the two solid surfaces nor on the sliding velocity v. At the same time, the proportional coefficient p, known as the frictional coefficient, depends not on the sliding velocity or on the apparent contact area of the two snrfaces bnt, rather, only on the moving materials according to this law. The proportionality constant p usually lies within a range of 0.5-1.0 [33]. However, the gel friction does not simply obey... [Pg.226]

Consider a simply supported beam loaded transversely by a uniformly distributed load w (force/length). If the temperature of the beam is suddenly decreased by 5r, what is the energy release rate G Neglect any heat energy. Relate 5T to 5L, and express in terms of L/R, the coefficient of thermal expansion. [Pg.118]
