Ultraviolet light causes a chemical change in dihydrocholesterol to produce cholecalciferol, a precursor of vitamin D. The latter conforms better to the definition of a steroid hormone than a vitamin. Indeed, the classification of vitamin D as a vitamin is an historical accident.
