Visible light INDEX

Optical Properties. Teflon FEP fluorocarbon film transmits more ultraviolet, visible light, and infrared radiation than ordinary window glass. The refractive index of FEP film is 1.341—1.347 (74). 

The transparency and refractive power of the lenses of our eyes depend on a smooth gradient of refractive index for visible light. This is achieved partly by a regular packing arrangement of the cells in the lens and partly by a smoothly changing concentration gradient of lens-specific proteins, the crystallins. 

The refractive index of a medium is the ratio of the speed of light in a vacuum to its speed in the medium, and is the square root of the relative permittivity of the medium at that frequency. When measured with visible light, the refractive index is related to the electronic polarizability of the medium. Solvents with high refractive indexes, such as aromatic solvents, should be capable of strong dispersion interactions. Unlike the other measures described here, the refractive index is a property of the pure liquid without the perturbation generated by the addition of a probe species. 

The resolution of the instrument in the vertical direction depends upon the wavelength of visible light (450 to 850 nm), the oil refractive index, and the difference between the maximum and the minimum interference intensity as follows [5,18] ... 

The next step in this study is to test this control algorithm on the actual laboratory reactor. The major difficulty is the direct measurement of the state variables in the reactor (T, M, I, W). Proposed strategy is to measure total mols of polymer (T) with visible light absorption and monomer concentration (M) with IR absorption. Initiator concentration (I) can be monitored by titrating the n-butyl lithium with water and detecting the resultant butane gas in a thermal conductivity cell. Finally W can be obtained by refractive index measurements in conjuction with the other three measurements. Preliminary experiments indicate that this strategy will result in fast and accurate measurements of the state vector x. 

Certain disease states also produce alterations in the skin s optical properties. Alterations of the skin s surface, such as by psoriatic plaques, decrease transmitted fight. The effect may be lessened by application of oils whose refractive index is similar to that of skin (Anderson and Parrish, 1981). Disorders such as hyperbilirubinemia, porphyrias, and blue skin nevi result in increased absorption of visible light due to accumulation or altered distribution of endogenous chromophoric compounds.
