Others, however, are harder to tackle. Xenotransplantation of hearts, kidneys, and livers of immunologically neutral pigs, for example, has virtually been stopped because of possible transfer of pig viruses onto humans. The public s awareness of a prion involved in mad-cows disease has led to questions about the safety of using bovine material in heart surgery.
