Vibrational cascade time scale

The time-scale of molecular vibrations is of the order of 10 13 s, just outside the ps range. Internal conversions and in particular vibrational cascades therefore fall into the femtosecond (10-15s) time-scale. However, the spin-forbidden processes of intersystem crossing take place in times of a few ps to several ns. The case of benzophenone is a good example of the compensation between spin and orbital angular momentum. The rise of the triplet state absorption shows that intersystem crossing is completed within some 20 ps. [Pg.260]

Each collision event can be considered separate from all other events (those leading up to or following the respective collision) as the interaction time for each collision ( 10 s) is less than that of any lattice vibrations induced as a result of the respective collisions ( 10 s). Also of note is the fact that full collision cascades terminate within 10 s. These time scales are revealed through simulations as are discussed in Section 3.2.1.3. [Pg.52]

The primary reason why various simulations of sputtering resulting from momentum transfer, as described within the linear cascade model, are successful lies in the fact that the collision events can be treated using classical arguments, that is, Newtonian mechanics as opposed to quantum mechanics. Owing to the insignificant wavelength of ions ( 10" A), quantum mechanics is not needed. In addition, calculations are simplified for isotropic linear cascades as these represent a linear sequence of independent collision events that occur over time scales much shorter than lattice vibrations. [Pg.60]
