This filter has leaves, or tubes, arranged vertically in an open tank, and connected to a discharge manifold. Liquid is drawn through the filter elements by a pump coimected to the discharge manifold. Vacuum leaf filters have advantages of low cost (no pressure vessel) and ease of inspection. 

FQtration with Filter Aids. A wide range of pressure and vacuum cake filters can be used with both precoat and body aid fihration. Most of these operate in the batch mode and include the filter press, the vertical and horizontal leaf filters with sluice or centrihigal disduuge and the vertical tubular fih . The rotary drum vacuum fitter works in a semi-batch shion in that the precoat is removed progressively as the fitration proceeds. 

Fabric stretch arises in several types of filter, but the cause can depend on the design and operation of the filter. In filter presses and both vacuum and pressure leaf filters stretch may occur as a result of the vertical pull of heavy filter cakes on the cloth during cake discharge in filter presses the stretch can result in portholes in the cloth being pulled out of alignment with the holes... 

Leaf and plate filters are mostly relatively simple pressure-driven filters made up of fiat filtration elements, although they can also be vacuum driven. The overall configuration of the filter may be horizontal or vertical, and the basic choice between them is often made according to the space available in the factory. They are mainly used for batch-operated solids recovery, although in combination with precoat they can also be employed for clarification and decontamination duties. 

Vacuum leaf filters are less common, although cheaper than the pressurized version, because of the lack of a pressure vessel. They consist of an open tank full of the liquid to be filtered, into which the array of vertical leaves is submerged. Vacuum is applied through the filtrate manifold, and cake builds up on the leaves until cake removal becomes due. This kind of filter is mostly used with precoat as a clarifying filter, which is not only cheaper but also more easily inspected and maintained.
