Ventricular fibrillation clinical significance

Proarrhythmia refers to development of a significant new arrhythmia (such as VT, ventricular fibrillation [VF], or TdP) or worsening of an existing arrhythmia. Proarrhythmia results from the same mechanisms that cause other arrhythmias or from an alteration in the underlying substrate due to the antiarrhythmic agent. TdP is a rapid form of polymorphic VT associated with evidence of delayed ventricular repolarization due to blockade of potassium conductance. TdP may be hereditary or acquired. Acquired forms are associated with many clinical conditions and drugs, especially type la and type III IKr blockers. [Pg.74]

Clinical use of amiodarone is limited because of its high toxicity, which consists of cardiac block, bradycardia, cardiac insufficiency, damaged thyroid gland function, neuropathology, and increased sensitivity to light, all of which significantly limit use of amiodarona, and it is only used in therapy for extremely serious tachyarrhythmias such as reoccurring ventricular fibrillation and hemodynamic unstable ventricular tachycardia, and only under supervision of a physician in a clinical situation. Synonyms of amiodarone are cordarone, rythmarone, and others. [Pg.253]

The clinical consequences of significant mitral regurgitation are numerous and include impaired quality of life (particularly with dyspnea and fatigue on exertion), left ventricular enlargement and dysfunction, arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, secondary pulmonary hypertension and sudden cardiac death. Concomitant mitral regurgitation can be particularly deleterious in patients with either congestive heart failure or ischemic heart disease (15,16). [Pg.125]
