Venlafaxine trifluoperazine

A 44-year-old man with major depression had been taking the antipsychotic drug trifluoperazine (3 mg/ day) for anxiety for several years (51). He was given venlafaxine 75 mg/day, and 12 hours after the first dose developed anxiety and malaise. He was sweating and had tremor and rigidity. His blood pressure fluctuated... 

A case of neuroleptic malignant syndrome has been reported in a patient taking trifluoperazine 1 mg daily who then took one dose of venlafaxine 75 mg. This may have occurred as a result of dopamine inhibition by the two drugs. A suggestion that the symptoms seen may have been due to the serotonin syndrome , (p.9), has also been made. ...
